Creole Choir of Cuba: Tande-La

One of the most enjoyable - and surprising- hits of the last couple of years in the UK was the success of this phenomenal choir, whose repertoire consists of traditional Haitian songs sung in a style suggesting that they hail from the island of Haiti itself. And yet they are all Cuban, from the city of Camaguey, which does not even boast a ‘tumba francesa', the old cultural centres for the Haitian descendents which still survive in Santiago and Guantanamo.

Wara - Somewhereland

Thanks in part to the community of young Cubans in London, the capital city is currently a very exciting place to be for anyone making or searching for new music. The London based group Wara is one such example, a project created- and directed -by the talented and adventurous Cuban vocalist and keyboard player Eliane Correa. The band has recently produced this CD whose playful and positive title represents well their eclectic musical landscape.

Cuba: A History, by Sergio Guerra Viaboy & Oscar Loyola Vega

A book that does exactly what it says on the tin, or at least the front cover, 'Cuba: A History' is a slim volume that sets out the what, where, when and who of Cuban history from 1492-2008.

Five hundred years are packed into just over 100 pages of clear and concise narrative on the pivotal events and people that shaped the island.

Cuba Condemns Security Council Attitude towards Israel

Cuba condemned at the United Nations the passivity and the silence of the Security Council in view of Israel’s aggressive actions.

The Cuban permanent representative to the UN, Pedro Nuñez, talked about the construction of settlements in Palestinian territories and the blockade in the Gaza Strip during a debate on the situation in the Middle East, reports Prensa Latina news agency.

Venezuela, Cuba outfox U.S. with fiber optic cable

HAVANA (Reuters) - Venezuela will connect Cuba to a high-speed fiber optic cable next month undermining U.S. sanctions prohibiting Cuba's access to nearby underwater lines, the head of the project said on Tuesday.

A French ship will begin laying the 995-mile submarine cable on Saturday and it is expected to reach eastern Cuba by February 8, Wilfredo Morales, president of Telecomunicaciones Gran Caribe, the Venezuelan-Cuban joint venture that owns the line, said.

"This is a project that we consider of high strategic importance in the region ... It will be operated by technicians from our countries and we are not going to be dependent on any economic or other interest of another state or the empire," Morales said in an interview with state-run Radio Rebelde.
